Tooth decay and cavities are caused by acid that’s produced by interactions between oral bacteria and food particles that’s left in and around your teeth. Food that are high in sugar content, starchy and/or sticky, are linked to higher levels of acid-causing bacteria. Poor nutrition can also weaken your immune system which can make you more susceptible to gum disease.

When thinking about your diet, you want to have a variety and in moderation. Eat meals that have a variety of options from all five major food groups.
Vitamins and Minerals for Oral Health
Your teeth and jaws are made up mostly from calcium. This calcium helps protect and rebuild your teeth’s enamel. When we are not getting enough calcium it can put us at risk for getting gum disease and tooth decay.
Vitamins A and D
Getting enough vitamin D is important because it helps you to absorb calcium. If you are deficient in vitamin D it can lead to burning mouth syndrome. Foods containing phosphorous (meat, poultry, fish, milk and eggs) and vitamin A (sweet potatoes, liver, spinach) can help protect your enamel.
Eating vitamin C promotes healthy gums and helps to heal wounds quicker. A sever lack of vitamin C can lead to bleeding gums or loose teeth. Vitamins B3, B2 and B12 also are great for promoting oral health.
