HPV’s Link to Oral Cancer
What is HPV?
HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the world. There are more than 40 different strains of HPV. Many though do not pose a serious health risk.
Oral Signs of HPV
Most people are unaware that HPV can infect your mouth and throat by invading the mucous membranes that cover the lining of these areas. HPV can cause warts in and around the mouth and throat area. The HPV strain that show up in the mouth and throat typically do pose serious health risks because they have been linked to oral cancer. Actually HPV in the oral cavity is the leading cause of oropharyngeal cancer.
Some of the common symptoms of oropharyngeal cancer is a persistent sore throat, earaches, hoarseness, enlarged lymph nodes, pain when swallowing, and unexplained weight loss. If you experience several of these symptoms for more than two weeks you should talk to your dentist.
