Scaling is where they scrape off the tartar from above and below your gum line. Root planing will get rid of rough spots on your tooth root where germs gather, this helps to remove bacteria from your mouth.

In addition to the special cleaning, your dentist might prescribe special mouthwashes or topical treatments along with other types of treatments.

If you have advanced gum disease surgery might be required to remove the infected gum tissue or teeth.

How Do You Prevent Gum Disease?

It might sound pretty basic but the best way to prevent gum disease is to thoroughly remove plaque when brushing, at least twice a day. Flossing once a day along with regular visits to your dentist for teeth cleanings will help to minimize the risk of developing gum disease. Maintaining a healthy diet, abstaining from cigarette and tobacco use will also go a long way to help prevent gum disease.
