Most of us wouldn’t mind losing a few pounds, and many of us are going to low-carbohydrate diets to do it. But as the pounds come off, sometimes the bad breath comes on. Are you finding that to be the case? Why is this such a problem?
As we limit the amount of carbohydrates, our bodies turn to burning fat instead. Which is the whole purpose right? The issue with that is, when our bodies burn fat as fuel, chemicals called ketones are produced. The more ketones that are released in the breath and urine the greater the chances of bad breath.
In fact the ketones aren’t the only culprit contributing to bad breath with this diet. The types of food eaten also play a role. High-protein foods can produce more sulfur compounds, which is one of the biggest causes of bad breath.
How to Combat Bad Breath
There are a couple of things you can do to help combat this problem.
- Drink lots of water – Drinking water helps dilute the concentration of ketones. Drinking water can also help wash away excess bacteria and food particles.
- Chew sugar-free gum that contains xylitol – Chewing sugar-free gum after a meal increases saliva production which can help neutralize acid production and rinses food debris away. An added benefit is xylitol helps to prevent cavities.
- Brush after each meal – Brushing goes a long way in helping to alleviate bad breath. You can also clean your tongue with a tongue scraper to help eliminate odors.
