Halitosis, also referred to as bad breath, affects more than 80 million people in this country. Bad breath can have quite an impact on someone, both personally and socially. That being the case, let’s discuss what causes bad breath and how you can control it.
What causes bad breath?
Usually the source of bad breath is in your gums and tongue. It can be caused by bacteria growing in your mouth from decayed food particles, debris in your mouth and/or bad oral hygiene. However, bad breath can also be caused by other reasons, such as, an infection, diabetes, kidney failure or liver malfunction. Sometimes stress, your diet, age and hormones can even cause bad breath. If you have issues with dry mouth or you use tobacco, these can be a contributing factor as well. There are also several foods that can cause bad breath.
How to control bad breath
A key way to help combat bad breath is visiting your dentist regularly for a cleaning and checkup. Getting rid of the plaque and bacteria that build up on and between your teeth can greatly help with bad breath and your dentist will be able to detect any systemic causes.
Good oral hygiene can’t be stressed enough when it comes to fighting bad breath. Always brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day. It is also highly recommended that you clean your tongue with a toothbrush or tongue scraper.
In addition, always drink lots of water and chewing sugar-free gum with xylitol can also help.
